What to Wear for Spring Family Photos
Spring family photos are one of my favourites, especially when everything is starting to bloom and Perth finally gets those beautiful soft evenings again.
But deciding what everyone is going to wear? That’s usually the part that causes the most stress!!
So here’s my biggest tip:
Don’t try to match. Try to coordinate.
Start with Mum
I always recommend choosing Mum’s outfit first. Pick something you genuinely feel beautiful and comfortable in, then build everyone else’s outfits around it.
A flowing maxi dress, linen, earthy tones or beautiful textures or patterns can all photograph beautifully.
From there, choose colours that complement rather than perfectly match.
Creams and warm whites
Soft browns and beige
Muted greens
Dusty pinks
Denim
Warm neutrals
Soft blues
Think About Texture
One of the easiest ways to make everyone’s outfits look beautiful together is to mix textures. Think linen, denim, knits, overalls, cotton, maxi dresses and layers rather than having everyone wearing the exact same type of fabric. It gives your photos more depth and keeps everything feeling natural.
A Few Things I’d Avoid
You don’t need to completely rethink your wardrobe, but I’d generally steer clear of:
Big logos and characters — they can quickly date your photos.
Everyone wearing the exact same colour — matching white tops and blue jeans can look a little too coordinated.
Tiny stripes or busy patterns — they can be distracting, especially on camera.
Anything you’re uncomfortable in — this one is the most important.
If you’re constantly pulling at your dress or worrying about whether you can move, you’re going to find it harder to relax.
And Don’t Forget the Kids
Your toddler doesn’t need to be dressed like a tiny adult. Let their personality come through. A little linen romper, a textured dress, cute overalls or simple neutral separates can look gorgeous without feeling overly styled.
And if they want to run barefoot through the grass? Even better 💖
Spring in Perth Can Be Unpredictable
It’s worth bringing a light layer, especially for those later afternoon sessions.
A cardigan, linen shirt or little knit can be easily added or removed depending on the weather.
And if we’re heading into a field or grassy location, choose shoes you’re happy to actually walk in.
Because chances are, we’re going to be moving around!
Want a little outfit inspiration?
I’ve put together some of my favourite spring colour combinations and outfit ideas below to give you a starting point.
You don’t need to copy them exactly - use them as inspiration and make them your own.
The goal isn’t for your family to look perfectly styled.
It’s for you to look back at these photos years from now and still see you 💖🥰
