What Happens During a Family Photography Session?

One of the questions I get most often from families before their session is:

“But what if my kids don’t behave?”

The truth is, I don’t expect them to. I have two little ones and completely understand the stress of getting the kids ready and to the shoot, before the sesion has even started it can feel like chaos.

I don’t start family sessions standing still and smiling perfectly at the camera. I always begin by getting on the kids level, introducing myself and finding out their little interests. Giving everyone a chance to settle in and forget about the camera being there. From there, we’ll move. I’ll prompt Mum & Dad then let the kids lead where they need to. Some of my favourite images happen in the in-between posing moments; reaching hands, snuggles, the things you aren’t even thinking of in the moment.

Every session unfolds a little differently, but there are a few moments I naturally lean towards every time.

But you’ll never be left wondering what to do with your hands or where to stand. But my goal is never stiff posing.

It’s creating space and guiding you for genuine connection.

Winter sessions are particularly beautiful for this. Especially with the early afternoons and super cosy knits!

When you receive your gallery, I don’t want you to see perfectly posed photographs.

I want you to remember how it felt, the cuddles and the chaos of inbetween poses. That’s the real heart behind my family photography.

And it’s exactly why no two galleries ever look the same.
