3 Things to Know Before Booking Your Maternity Photographer (and Why It Matters More Than You Think)

Pregnancy comes with a million decisions, most of them happening while you’re tired, emotional, and already thinking ten steps ahead.

If you’re considering a maternity photoshoot (or even just starting to think about it), these are the three most important things to know before booking your maternity photographer. Not from a sales perspective but from a supportive, stress-reducing one.

1. When should I book my maternity photoshoot?

This is the number one question I’m asked, and for good reason.

The best time to book your maternity session is early in your second trimester, ideally between 14–20 weeks. Even though your maternity session itself usually takes place later (around 28–34 weeks), booking early ensures availability and gives you space to plan calmly.

By the time you’re well into your third trimester, things often feel heavier, physically and mentally. Locking your session in early removes one more decision from your plate and allows the experience to feel intentional rather than rushed.

A good maternity photographer will help guide timing based on:

  • how you’re feeling in your body

  • the style of session you’re dreaming of

  • whether you’re planning a studio or outdoor shoot

Booking early doesn’t mean committing to exact details, it simply gives you peace of mind.

2. What is actually worth spending money on during pregnancy?

Pregnancy comes with endless “must-haves” but not everything deserves equal priority.

Most mums find the second trimester is the sweet spot for investing in:

  • comfortable maternity basics; bras, stretchy tops and comfy shoes

  • support items that help with sleep and movement

  • experiences that help you slow down and connect

A maternity photoshoot often sits in this category, not because it’s essential, but because it becomes one of the few things that remains long after pregnancy ends.

Photos aren’t just about documenting a bump. They’re about remembering how it felt; the anticipation, the quiet moments, the version of you before life changes again.

When everything else fades, these images often become what mothers are most grateful they invested in.

3. How can I prepare for labour in a way that feels calm and supported?

Preparing for labour isn’t just about birth plans and hospital bags, it’s also about reducing decision fatigue for the weeks that follow.

One of the simplest ways to create a calmer postpartum experience is to book your newborn session during pregnancy. When baby arrives, the last thing most families want to think about is researching photographers, availability, or logistics.

Having your newborn session pre-booked means:

  • one less thing to organise while you’re recovering

  • flexibility around your due date

  • a slower, more supported experience once baby is here

Many families choose to book a bump-to-baby bundle, allowing both chapters to be documented with intention and ease, without having to make new decisions in the newborn haze.

A gentle reminder

You don’t need to have everything figured out before booking your maternity session.

A thoughtful photographer will guide you through timing, styling, location, and preparation, so the experience feels held from the very beginning.

If you’re early in pregnancy and already thinking ahead, that’s not “too soon.”
It’s simply you caring for your future self.
